I have seen photographs of Zoe Ouvrier's work before, however it wasn't until I saw it in person, that I could fully appreciate how special it really is. So much so, that it saddens me to think that the majority of people will not get to experience her work in the flesh. Gallery FUMI in London have a large screen of Ouvrier's on display. I wasn't prepared for the overwhelming beauty of this particular piece, which boldly covers a whole end wall of the former 19th century school gym.
French artists Ouvrier takes her inspiration from nature and produces unique carved wooden pieces, paintings and decorative screens. The surface of this black painted wooden screen was carved away to reveal the raw timber beneath.
It is overpowering while comforting, Rustic while delicate. I just loved it.
